It's in the extreme upper east portion of Tennessee, laying in both Johnson and Carter counties. Watauga is the highest of the TVA lakes at a full normal elevation of 1959 feet. It's formed by the dam on the Watauga River a few miles upstream from Elizabethton and backs up both the Watauga and Elk rivers shortly after they leave North Carolina. |

| This is the Johnson County boat ramp site. It's in the southern part of Johnson county. We're looking (roughly) north here toward the county seat, Mountain City, something like 15 miles away if you go in a straight line. Of course, in this mountainous county, there's no such thing as a straight line unless you're flying over it. In case you are, the Johnson County airport is ahead and just to your right, something like 9 miles out. Fly in and get a boat at one of the marinas. |
